Quadruple Fly-Out

On Sunday May 30th, around 1800 hrs units responded to the area of Thunderbird and the side gate for a motor vehicle accident. Rescue 3 (Stern), Amb 38 (J. Nero), and Command 3 (R. Smith) responded to the scene, while enroute Calvert Control advised possible ejection. All units arrived on scene to find a pick-up versus a tree with 5 patients. 4 of the 5 patients had been ejected. 2 helicopters were automatically started due to the obvious injuries of the patients. Crews requested additional ambulances and went to work triaging the patients. Due to the other 2 patients decreasing level of consciousness it was decided by crews on scene to fly the other 2 patients that were ejected. Crews packaged patients and transported them to the landing site which had been established by Engine 31 (Williams). Trooper 7 and 6 transported 4 patients to local trauma centers.

House Fire

Early on Saturday 5/15 Solomons VFD was alerted for area box 310 at 654 Grenada drive for the dryer fire inside a residence.  E34 (Nuse), and T3 (Williams)) quickly marked up along with other mutaul aid departments, during the response Calvert advised a co.3 member on the scene requesting the working fire dispatch.  E34 arrived on scene first with a 2 story single family dwelling light smoke showing from the roof line.  FF C.Callison, F.Sheckells, C.Shannon quickly made entry into the structure with a 1 3/4 attack and made a quick knock on the laundry room which was fully involved.  All searches proved to be negative and ventilation was coordinated by Truck 3.  Command was held by Chief 2A and the scene was held with E34,E71,T3.  All units in service 1022.

Route 4 and Rousby Hall Rd

In the late afternoon hours Saturday the tones for a rescue box were dropped. Units were dispatched to the intersection of Route 4 and Rousby Hall Rd for the motor vehicle accident. Command 3 (J. Stern) Rescue 3 (C. Roberts), Ambulance 37 ( EMS LT. K. Shea), and Ambulance 38 (K. Radznyiak) responded to the scene. Command 3 arrived on location and found a 6 vehicle rear end collision and requested additional ambulances. Rescue 3 and Amb 37 arrived on location and began assessing patients. There were 4 total patients for transport. Amb 37 handled the most serious patient who was facing life-threatening injuries. The medic unit was immeadiately requested and responded to the scene, also the availability of the helicopter was checked. Patients were removed from their vehicles and packed into their ambulances. A helicopter was requested for Amb. 37’s patient, but was down due to weather. Ambulances transported the patients to local hospitals. Amb 37 ground transported a patient to PG Shock Trauma due to his injuries. Units remained on the scene to remove hazards, and command was terminated.

Gregg Dr. House Fire

On Sunday morning at 0036 hours Solomons Co. 3 and surrounding companies were dispatched to the rear of 1355 Gregg Drive for the house fire. Engine 33 (C. Roberts) and Ambulance 37 (EMS Lt. K. Shea) responded fully staffed to the area. While en route to the scene, Calvert Control advised that they had received a second call stating it was a working fire and the residence was on Gregg Dr. While approaching the scene, a glow in the sky could be noticed. Engine 33 arrived on location with a single story single family dwelling, fully involved and established the command. Engine 33’s crew stretched lines to the front and rear of the house and began to make a knock on the fire. Command was then passed to Sgt. C. Buchanan. Engine 71 arrived on location and set up water supply. Once water supply was established a 300’ line was stretched from the rear of 33’s hosebed by E-71’s crew. At this time Chief 2C Pat Hassler arrived on scene command was passed to him, leaving E-33 with Operations. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down and water supply was established by the tankers, crews were able to gain entry to the residence to continue extinguishment. The fire was under control at 0137. Crews from Solomons, St. Leonard, Prince Frederick, Bay District and Hollywood worked together to extinguish the remaining hot spots and perform overhaul operations. Crews operated on the scene until 0501 before returning to service. Solomons Volunteers would like to thank Leonardtown Fire Department for providing a fill in for our station while units were operating on the fire ground.

Around 1145 hours on Friday, February 12th rescue tones were dropped for an auto accident, northbound route four and Cove Point Road. Units from Solomons and St. Leonard Fire departments responded to the call. EMS Chief 3A (R. Smith) responded to the scene along with EMS Sgt (S. Jones). EMS Chief 3A (R. Smith) arrived on the scene within a minute of the call being dispatched and established the 306 command followed by EMS Sgt 3 (S. Jones). EMS Chief 3 A (R. Smith) requested Squad 7 and a medic unit for entrapment. Squad 7 (Lt. J. Anderson), and Ambulance 78 (EMT S. Myers) responded. Rescue 3 (Sgt. K. Frank) responded along with Ambulance 37 (EMT P. Waters), and Engine 31 (FF J. Wilson). As Rescue 3 was approaching the scene EMS Chief 3 A(R. Smith) advised them that they would have to extricate all three patients with the assistance of Squad 7. EMS Chief 3A (R. Smith) requested three helicopters for two Category "B" patients, and one Category "A" patient. Rescue 3 and Squad 7 began extrciation around 1154, and worked very vigorously to get the patients out of the vehicle. During extrication Medstar 3 and Eagle 2 arrived to transport patients to a trauma center. All patient were extricated at 1230 hours and EMS personnel were able to care for patients. After EMS personnel treated the patients, Eagle 2 transported two patients to PG Trauma Center for further treatment. Medstar 3 transported one patient to PG Trauma Center for further treatment. All units were clear the scene about 1245 hours.

Capsized Boat

On September, 1, 2009 at 1030 hrs, Calvert Control received a call reporting a capsized boat with 2 subjects in the water off Solomons Island. Units from Co. 3, Co. 7,  Co. 4, and Cals. responded. EMS Chief 3 arrived and assumed command. Zodiac 3 (Chief 3) and Zodiac responded to the area and searched for the vessel.  The boat was located in the Patuxent River just off of the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. The 2 subjects were taken out of the water and transported to shore by the Zodiacs. They were uninjured. Boat 4 remained with the vessel until the arrival of the Coast Guard. All cleared at 1147 hrs.

Tanker Transfer

On Wednesday, May 20 th at 1000 Co. 3 was alerted for a Tanker Transfer to Co. 27 Hollywood. Tanker 3 responded and filled their station for 3 hrs while they were fighting a house fire with a reported subject trapped.

Flyout from Co. 3

On Wednesday, May 20 th at 1419 hrs, crews at the station were called to our parking lot for a drive up with a wrist injury. Upon further investigation it was learned the patient fell from a high location in a tree while doing some trimming. A decision was made by EMS Chief 3 to request a helicopter for transport to a trauma center. Engine 31 (FF J. Wilson) handled the landing site at Glascock field for Trooper 7. Trooper 7 transported to Prince Georges Hospital. Units cleared at 1500 hrs,

Overturned vehicle

At 1630 hours on Monday, May 18 th rescue tones were dropped for a “Overturned vehicle into a tree”. EMS Chief 3 (R. Smith), Chief 3A (S. Nero), Rescue 3, Medic 103, Ambulance 39, and Ambulance 79 all responded along with other personnel POV. Units got on scene to find a vehicle overturned against a tree. Chief 3A (Nero) took command. Patient was out of the vehicle being assessed by EMS personnel who went POV to the scene. All units assisted in patient care prior to going to the landing site. Patient was transported to the landing site priority two. Trooper 7 transported the patient to PG Shock Trauma in Cheverly, MD. Command was terminated at 1700 hours.

Oven Fire

At 1732hrs Solomons and neighboring stations were alerted to an oven fire in the Ranch Club.  Promptly both Engine 33 (Sgt 3. Buchannan) and Truck 3 (FF Miller) marked up on the air and proceeded to the location.  Chief Engineer Calison arrived on location and found burnt food in the oven but the fire was out.  He advised for company 3 units to continue in for some ventilation and all others be put in service.  Upon arrival Engine 33's crew quickly opened and ventilated the house while Truck 3 staged at the end of the road.  All unit returned to service at 1808 hrs.

Fully Involved Car Fire

At 0717hrs on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 tones were dropped for the “Fully involved vehicle fire next to a residence”. Units from Solomons, St.Leonard, Hollywood, and Bay District all responded. Ambulance 39 was the first on the scene followed by Engine 31(Chief 3B-S.Thomas). E-31 used foam due to the vehicle leaking fuel caused by the fire. Chief 3A (S.Nero) responded in Command 3, and took command when he arrived. On arrival Chief 3B held E-31, E-273, and Ambulance 39. Command was terminated at 0746hrs, E-31, E-273, and A-39 returned in service.

2nd Alarm House Fire in Ranch Club

At 1522 hours on Friday, March 6, 2009 tones were dropped for a house fire in the Ranch Club off of Abilene Court. About five minutes after the call was dispatched the “Working Fire” dispatch was started. St Leonard Engine 71 and reported a 2 story single family with fire showing from side "A". Engine 71’s crew was going to attack the fire from the interior but was pulled out due to hazardous conditions. Apparatus from Solomons, Prince Frederick, Hollywood, Bay District, St. Leonard, and Benedict Volunteer Fire Departments all responded on the second alarm call. All units worked together to get the fire extinguished, command was terminated at 1916 hours.

Plans are being made for the final inspection of Truck 3. Past Chief"s Chris Franklin, John Pardoe and Bernie Shea, will be leaving around the end of February for the inspection. If all goes well we hope to have Truck 3 back home in a week or two. We would like to thank our past Chiefs for all their hard work in the rehab of Truck 3.

Engine 34 rehab work has got ton underway as the past Chiefs again plan to take this project on. More detail to come.

Truck 3 Rehab Update

Well a few weeks ago Truck 3 began its long trip to Florida to begin its much need rehab.  While we have been missing her they have been able to get some major work done on here in the process as can be seen in the photos.  She has been sent down to get a list of things done including the hydraulics, new doors, new paint and new lights.  When she arrives back in town everyone will be in awe to see such a beautiful piece of equipment.  Truck 3 is due back in a first due area near u sometime in December.

Saint Marys House Fire

At 2009 hrs Company 3 was alerted to a possible house fire on North Patuxent Beach Blvd in Saint Marys.  Promptly the duty crew from the substation marked up Engine 34 (Rea) and responded.  While enroute the crew were alerted that it was working and fully involved.  The crew quickly prepared for a long nite.  Engine 92 (Bay District) arrived and advised that they had moderate smoke on side Alpha and were investigating.  Engine 34 arrived shortly after Tower 9 and Squad 3 and picked up Engine 92's supply line.  After investigation crews found that instead of a fully involved fire that the it was a minor chimmney fire and a few chimmney bombs resolved the problem.  Crews returned and went back in serivce at 2055 hrs.

HG Trueman Accident

At 1808 hrs, units from Solomons and Saint Leonard were alerted to an auto accident at HG Trueman and Rousby Hall Road.  Promptly Rescue 3 (Zeeger), Ambulance 37 (Yeckley), Ambulance 38 (Dyer), Ambulance 39 (Pratt) and Ambulance 79 responded.  Rescue 3 arrived on loaction to find a 2 vehicle collision with approximately 5 people involved.  Rescue 3 held it with Company 3 units only.  A-37 handled 2 priority 3 patients that were transported to the hospital while the rest were signed refusals.  All units cleared at 1936 hrs.

Elevator Entrapment

Company 3 units were dispatched to 1200 Spinnaker Way in Solomons Landing for a stuck elevator with a person entraped.  Rescue 3 ( EMS Chief Smith) and Ambulance 39 (EMS Sgt Tschupp) responded.  Upon arrival they found that the elevator was just below ground level with one occupant inside.  The door was opened by making use of the elevator keys and the occupant was freed with no injury.  Afterwards the power was reset and the elevator was put back in service.

Fully Involved Shed

Around 1100 hrs Solomons and neighboring departments were alerted to a shed fire on Hummingbird lane across from the Substation.  Promptly Engine 34, Engine 33 and Ambulance 38 marked up.  Engine 34 arrived and radioed back that they had a working fully involved shed and was pulling a line.  Chief 3 Wilson and Chief 3B Nero arrived and assumed the command.  Shortly after Engine 33 arrived and began water supply operations to Engine 34 while they continued to knock the fire down.  Very shortly after the scene was put under control and the staged mutual aide companies were put in service while Company 3 re-racked the hoselines.  At approximately 1200 hrs all equipment was in service.
