Kenny Miller has been a member of SVRSFD for the past 4 years since 2021. Kenny is being recognized as our Officer of the Month for January! Kenny has been one of our most active members since the moment he walked in the door! At any point Kenny can be found teaching a drill or class, fixing apparatus or anything around the station, or riding calls assisting the citizens of our community! Kenny takes pride in everything he does and is always trying to help our department be better than it was yesterday. He is a team player, a leader and an amazing friend or family to so many of our members.
We asked Kenny some questions to have him share some of the reasons why he enjoys volunteering and being a member of SVRSFD. As well as what roles he has played in our department and a little bit about his life outside of the fire department. This is what he said!
“I have been fortunate to be accepted by the department's members, despite my full-time career occasionally being viewed negatively by some. The respect I’ve received from all volunteers has made me feel valued. I also love that my family and I live within the first due area. The support from the community and the ongoing, positive relationships between the volunteer and career personnel make this department an enjoyable place to be. I began my career as a probationary firefighter/EMT. I was quickly assigned as the Assistant Training Officer for SVRSFD Co. 3. Over the years, I’ve taken on various roles, including firefighter/driver for all department apparatus, including the marine division. I served as Assistant Engineer, assisting the Chief Engineer with routine maintenance for our apparatus over the past year. I am also an FTO for EMS, Firefighting, Driver Training, and Fireboat Captain/Deckhand. Currently, I serve as the department Safety Officer, overseeing all safety aspects for the fire division and emergency scenes. I also maintain an active role in training and hold my MICRB Emergency Instructor certification through the state of Maryland. I am qualified to teach all MFRI courses, including EMS, Fire, Hazardous Materials, Rescue, and Management. Additionally, I hold a position with Spec Rescue International in Virginia Beach, VA, where I am a subject matter expert in Hazardous Materials, Mass Casualty Response, ICS, and technical rescue, including confined space, trench, rope, vehicle extrication, and building collapse. I am certified in USAR response and incident management as well. I have been married to the love of my life for over 25 years, and a proud father and PAW PAW. My family is the most important thing in my life. I am deeply passionate about serving our community with professionalism at all times. I value the opportunity to share my personal and professional knowledge, skills, and experience with my fellow volunteers. My goal is always to be the best we can be, consistently meeting the community's expectations for professionalism and accountability. My motto is simple: “Do the right thing, all the time.” We should all strive to be leaders, regardless of position or title. Never forget where you’ve come from, and always be ready to help others. Due to past and recent health related issues I would like to share this with everyone, Live for today because tomorrow isn’t promised. I would like to thank my department brothers and sisters for the outpouring of support over this past year. I consider the membership here as family.”
We are so lucky to have such and amazing and dedicated man like Kenny Miller as a part of our family and we are grateful for him every day! |
