By Safety Officer Brian Bowen
September 17, 2024

Just after 1200 hrs Ambulance 237 was returning to quarters when a box was dropped for a single truck up an embankment that had struck a telephone pole resulting in the wires falling on top of the truck. The driver had the chance to get out of the truck as the pole was still falling. The driver of the truck had advised the crews that he had supplies on the truck which were hazardous and could explode.

With this information the officers enroute to the scene requested a Hazmat unit from NDW (Pax River) to respond. A UN number was provide to the incoming Hazmat officer and crews stood by waiting on SMECO to secure the power lines that were still live on top of the truck.

Once power was secured crews from Solomons and Pax River secured the truck and the hazardous load that was within the truck. The owner of the truck was responsible to dispose of the hazmat from the truck that was secured by crews . There was no injuries from the incident and all units cleared.
