At 0900 hrs Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department opened its doors to the many children of the community hosting the First Annual Fire Prevention Day. It was an amazing show of children and enthusiasm. In years past Solomons during fire prevention week would go to each of the individual schools and do demonstrations. This year we decided to host it at our station since we are able to do a great deal more. Children enjoyed many activities including going thru the smokehouse, having fun in the moonbounce, using the brush truck's hose for target practice, and touring the firehouse and equipment. Members provided many demonstrations this year including knots, the use of fire gear, cutting up cars, climbing the ladder truck, and flowing water. The sheriffs department also brought over the K-9 unit which demonstrated how the dogs were used to retrieve lost property and find drugs. Lastly the favorite guest of the day was the appearance of Sparky which all the kids loved. We would like to thank everyone for their participation in this event making it as huge as it was. We hope the community enjoyed the day of excitement we provided. We can't wait til next next year for the 2nd annual which will be even bigger.

By FF N. Rea
During our regular business meeting both members and the Sealey family were pleasantly surprised when President Billy Jones had the membership go outside for the dedication of new Ambulance 39. Bob Sealey one of the original charter members of SVRSFD has been serving his community for more than four decades. Joined with his wife and family, President Jones presented the Ambulance to him adorned with a dedication plaque. An arrangement of roses was presented to Mrs. Sealey for allowing him to be a part of our lives. Mr. Sealey's dedication to both the community and company 3 has been extraordinary and we are proud to give him this honor.

Today crews manned many of the pieces to take them to the Southern Maryland Parade in Hollywood. At 1230 Brush 3, BX-3 with Zodiac 3, Utility 3, Ambulance 39, Rescue 3, Engine 31, Engine 33 and Truck 3 began the parade route. Every turn the pieces made heads turned as we showed them that even the older pieces have the ability to out shine the new ones. After the parade crews stayed and participated in the many games as in every year at Southern Maryland. First the day began with the Bucket Brigade where the teams ended up with more water on themselves than in the fill bucket. Next was the Tug of War. Our second team won their first match but were put out by a much larger group in round 2. The last competition and probably the most exciting was the Battle of the Buckets. Here teams used solid stream nozzles to push a keg on a wire. Our one team of Captain Rusch, FF/EMT LaFaive, and FF Hollinger lasted 3 rounds. The finally round of the day ended up being Newburg verse Dunkirk which lasted over 20 minutes. At the end of the day we came back with one trophy for the 2nd Best Aerial after Leonardtown who took first with their new Seagrave. Crews had and exciting and fun experience. We would like to thank all of our members for the wonderful experience Sunday and all the hard work they put into cleaning the apparatus over the last two weeks. We may not have taken home many trophies but we showed them that Solomons members are still some of the best. All units returned into service and in quarters at 1830.
