New EMTs
From: The Solomons Officers
We would like to congratulate John Carlson, Tim La Faive, and RJ Malveaux on the completion of their EMT class. EMT is one of the more difficult and time consuming (131 hours long) classes that MFRI offers to the department. In EMT class they learn skills to be able to recognize, assess, and manage medical and trauma signs and symptoms in patients of emergency situations. As these new EMTs get cut loose on our equipment, rest assure that they will be able to provide you with the best medical care you need.

Christmas preparation
By: Norman Rea
This weekend the station continued to prepare for the Christmas season by decorating the apparatus. Several of the members took time to string lights on both Engines 31 and 33. We even decided to mount a inflatable Santa for the evening on top of 33. Both Engines were pulled outside so photos could be taken and the community see our festive nature.

Photogapher
By: Norman Rea
If you have not noticed we have had a new person roaming around taking pictures of us. Her name is Debbie Soltow and she is a student at the local college. About a month or two ago Debbie came down one weekend looking to take pictures for her photography class. We conducted several drills to show her the different tasks we preformed as firefighters. Debbie is currently writing her final paper for class which is titled "The Life of a Firefighter". Last weekend at the training burn Debbie got some great pictures of a working house fire for her paper. Debbie has also been kind enough to donate many of her photos back to us to use on the webpage. "Debbie, as a membership we would like to thank you for these photos and memories. We are honored that you picked our department for your project and wish you the best of luck on your paper."

Now they will be able to take the many skills from the classroom and put them into practical use on the fire ground as they expand our membership as trained firefighters.

Monday, October 9, 2006 - On Monday, Ambulance 39 made her debut at the Solomons firehouse. It is a 2006 Horton model 453 mounted on a Ford F-450 Chassis. Not only has it been built on the new Ford Chasis but has also been decked out with LED lights and dual sirens so you will know when she is on the road. In the next few weeks it will undergo its final BLS inspections, get its radios installed, and be put in service.
We would like to thank Horton Emergency Vehicles for the creation of such a wonderful piece and Fesco Emergency Sales for providing the finishing touches to it.

Fire Prevention
By: Michelle Gray
On Monday Oct 9th, Members of Company 3 met at the main station around 7am to prepare for a long day of fire prevention at Dowell Elementary School. Five pieces of apparatus were taken from station Engine 31, Truck 3, Ambulance 38, Car 3, and Utility 3, as well as a Smoke Trailer lent to the department by Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department. Fire Prevention dog Sparky (FF. John Carlson) was there to greet the children as they arrived off of the buses. After the children had gone to their classes, FF Tim La Faive (the main speaker of the day), FF/EMT Kelly Radzyniak, and Sparky all went to visit the Pre-K classes. After each grade level was visited they were taken outside, where they got to see FF/EMT Dave Harris climb the ladder truck and take their picture from the top. The children also got a tour of the inside of the ambulance and the engine. They were given tours through the smoke trailer by FF Norman Rea and FF Michelle Gray, where they had to keep low and feel doors before entering. When the children exited the upper floor door they were met by other Firefighters (Robbie Lee, Tim Vantassal, R.J. Malveaux) and EMS aid (Jessica Nero) who helped the children down the ladders. The children really seemed to enjoy the race that was held between two firefighters (Norman Rea and Jason Hollinger) who started on opposite ends, had to race to their gear and put on which item the children would yell to put on. All in all I think they're favorite person of the day was definitely Sparky, who played tricks on the Fire Prevention crew. A special thanks to Prince Fredrick Volunteer Fire Department for the Smoke Trailer and Sgt 3 Matthew Rusch for setting the whole thing up.
Thanks to everyone involved in Fire Prevention: Matthew Rusch, Tim La Faive, Tim Vantassal, Kelly Radzyniak, John Carlson (Sparky), Michelle Gray, Norman Rea, Robbie Lee, Kelly Zimmer, R.j. Malveaux, Fire Chief Joey Leannarda, Jessica Nero, Jason Hollinger, Rich Wilson, Steve Nero, and Dave Harris
